The workshop

A country workshop on a highway that never stops.

Berri sits on the Sturt Highway, so the cars that come through the door are not all local. Some are. Some are three hours from home with a caravan behind them and a noise that started an hour ago.

It shows in the reviews. Of the five Google shows first, three were written by people passing through: one on the way to Western Australia in a broken D40, one down from Adelaide with trouble in a 4WD, and one who said that if he lived here we would be his go-to guys.

Brian Hill runs the place. He is a fully qualified mechanic, he has been at 14 Hughes Street since 2022, and the workshop is set up for the whole job: diagnostics, log book servicing, brakes, clutch, suspension, exhausts, tyres and air conditioning under one roof, rather than sending you somewhere else halfway through.

What we do

Eleven things, done properly.

This is the full list, not a sample of it. If a job is not on here, ring and ask, because plenty of what comes through the door does not fit neatly into a category.

01

Mechanical Repairs

Minor and major mechanical repairs, from the small jobs that stop a car being right to the ones that stop it moving at all.

02

Manufacturer Logbook Servicing

Your book stamped to the manufacturer's schedule. Servicing here keeps a new-car warranty intact, so long as the intervals and parts specifications are followed.

03

Vehicle Diagnostics

Current diagnostic equipment for the faults that only show as a light on the dash and a shrug from the last person who looked at it.

04

Air Conditioning Repairs

Repairs and re-gassing, done under Refrigerant Trading Authorisation AU57810. In a Riverland summer this is not a luxury service.

05

Batteries

Tested, supplied and fitted, so a flat battery is one visit rather than a week of jump starts.

06

Safety Inspections

Inspections carried out and reported straight, so you know what has to be done now and what can wait.

07

Exhausts

Repairs and replacements on pretty much anything that drives into the workshop, plus custom and specialised work through Ken's Exhaust Systems.

08

Fleet Maintenance

Ongoing servicing for local business vehicles, kept to a schedule rather than to whichever one breaks first.

09

Tyres

Quality tyres supplied and fitted at Hughes Street, so a new set is one appointment rather than a trip to the city.

10

Aftermarket Installations

Accessories and performance parts fitted properly, with the brands stocked in the front showroom.

11

Brakes, Clutch & Suspension

The full range of under-car servicing, brakes and clutch through to suspension work.

A hoist, a tool wall, and whatever came through the door this morning.

Exhausts

The shed with the exhaust history.

14 Hughes Street was the Ken's Exhaust Systems workshop long before it was ours. Ken and Kerri I'Anson ran it as a family business for forty years, and Ken built exhausts and modified suspensions for some of the most successful racing and show cars in Australia.

Brian took the lease on in July 2022. A2B Automotive is a separate business, and a younger one, but the arrangement is a good one: we are agents for Ken's Exhaust Systems, and Ken still comes in part time to take care of the specialised and custom exhaust work, so that side of the trade never left the building.

Day to day, that means we can repair or replace an exhaust on pretty much anything that drives into the workshop, and when a job wants something built rather than bolted on, the person who built them here for forty years is still down the road.

“Got my complete exhaust done and wow. Amazing job, the best... and of course she sounds sweet, with a little chrome to finish her off.”

Three worth spelling out

Tyres, air conditioning, and your log book.

Supplied and fitted

Quality tyres, fitted here

Tyres are one of the things Brian set out to specialise in when he took the workshop on. Supplied and fitted at Hughes Street, so a new set is one appointment rather than a trip to the city.

RTA AU57810

Air conditioning, done under licence

Repairs and re-gassing carried out under Refrigerant Trading Authorisation AU57810. Handling refrigerant legally in Australia requires that authorisation, and ours is published on our own page.

Manufacturer schedule

Log book servicing, warranty intact

Servicing by an independent workshop does not void a new-car warranty, provided the mechanic is qualified, the parts suit the vehicle, and the manufacturer's schedule and intervals are followed. All three apply here.

Absolutely amazing service! We are down in Berri from Adelaide and had some issues with our 4wd. We rang these guys and were told to bring it straight in. The bloke we spoke to was friendly and helpful. 2 hours later we picked up the car, all sorted. Charged us the most reasonable price. So unbelievably impressed with their professionalism....a good, honest business. Highly recommend.

Totally impressed. Brian managed to find and order my part for next day delivery and install. The guys were friendly and happy to explain any questions I had. They took an interest in the history as I've had lots of trouble with this part previously. They explained some info to me that had not been explained before and I felt confident I was in good hands. 10/10 on all fronts would definitely recommend - if I was local these would definitely be my go-to guys. As someone just passing through, getting my rig looked at and worked on asap is the biggest blessing. Thanks so much team

The display cabinet in the A2B Automotive waiting area, holding model race cars, motorbikes and polished chrome exhaust tips

Who you are dealing with

Brian Hill, and a cabinet full of model cars.

A2B Automotive is Brian's business. He is a fully qualified mechanic with the current equipment and the knowledge to service or repair your vehicle. He registered the business in March 2022 and took on the Hughes Street workshop that July.

Customers tend to write about the same two things. The first is that questions get answered: one review notes that the team took an interest in the history of a part that had given trouble before, and explained things nobody had explained to him previously. The second is the price, which comes up as “the most reasonable” and “good, honest business” rather than as a headline number.

In the waiting area there is a glass cabinet of model race cars, motorbikes and polished exhaust tips. It is not a marketing decision. It is just what a shed with forty years of exhaust building behind it ends up collecting.
